What is Backflow?

Backflow can occur when the water from your property flows backwards into the council’s pipes. Backflow is more likely to occur due to a pressure difference, for example, if the water pressure in your property is higher than the mains system or the main’s pressure drops.

This can introduce contaminants like chemicals, oil, or bacteria into the public freshwater system, affecting the water supply and causing residents to get sick or spread disease.

What is a Backflow Prevention Device?

Protecting the fresh drinking water throughout Sydney is everyone’s responsibility. One of the ways this is achieved is through backflow prevention devices which are fitted to everything from your garden tap, to your home water meter and toilet.

Properties or businesses with larger water supply requirements (large meter), an unmetered water connection or those who have a higher risk of contaminating the water supply must have a separate backflow device installed.

Backflow Prevention Devices

Backflow devices can have the following three elements to prevent water from flowing backwards:

  • Valve - Allows the water to flow in one direction
  • Air Gap
  • Break Tank

Property owners are responsible for the backflow prevention devices on their property. They must be tested annually and at the time of installation.

What devices are required for each Hazard Rating?

Backflow risk is classified as low, medium and high - wherein a low rating means it doesn’t endanger the health or cause injury, a medium rating means it could endanger health, and a high rating means any backflow issue can cause death.

The properties hazard rating will determine the type of device installed:

  • High hazard - Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD) or Registered Air Gap
  • Medium hazard - Testable Double Check Valve (DCV)
  • Low hazard - Non-testable backflow prevention containment device. Sydney Water’s 20 and 25-mm meters have a simple backflow prevention device installed suitable for low-hazard connections

Both medium and high-hazard devices are required to be tested every year by an accredited backflow plumber. Any valves that do not pass the test need to be replaced or repaired.
